We warmly invite all of you this Friday 5th to the official opening of the “Blurb Exhibition" by artist Nicola Tingey.

Nicola is inspired by texture in the man-made and natural world; a rusted boat, a weather
worn wall or a broken tiled floor are where she finds and collects her visual language.
Her work is an expression of colour and shape, processing a visual world through intuitive
mark making. It is a diologue between the internal and external world, a discussion through
colours, shapes and layers rather than words. The work reacts to each process applied and
builds in response to each previous application. It is in this language of colours, processes
and textures that she finds something to say.

There are a great many contrasts to be enjoyed in these pieces. It is the process of achieving
the correct balance which drives the work to completion. A balance of dark and light,
hard and soft, large and small as well as complimentary colours are explored in an abstract
expressionist style.

Her style has developed from observing the mark making and techniques of the great
abstract expressionist artists such as Cy Twombly, Robert Rauschenburg, Joan Mitchell
and Gerhard Richter. She is also influenced by contemporary abstract expressionism,
particularly the global movement of female abstract painters such as Heather Day,
Jave Davies and Claire Desjardins.

“ As a multi disciplinary artist I find it hard to pin myself down to any one Artistic process.
My ideas move from photography, to sculture, textiles and paint; sometimes a combination
of all. In my early practice I felt it necessary to say that my work were labelled as
‘Textiles’ or ‘Painting’ but now I no longer feel the need to. I am very proud to say that I can
work comfortably and confidently in a very wide range of mediums and processes, which
can sometimes make decisions about which paint technique to use extremely difficult.

It is exciting to live and work as an artist in a time of such change and growing interest in Art.
More people engage with and enjoy collecting from individual artists, wether that be
through Instagram, blogs or shopping sites like Etsy. For myself I have enjoyed having
complete creative and financial control of my work, in this way I am able to make anything
I like and not be bound by the expectations a gallery or online store might have.
I have had to learn a lot about self-publicising, web design and marketing strategies but I
feel empowered by this and always want to add more learning to my business.
I have fantastic conversations every day through my social media channels that feeds my ideas
and helps me to gain clarity on what I am doing. Social media, for me, is a two way relationship
that has helped me to grow into a confident and capable Artist.

I am very grateful to Linh and the team at Soma for allowing me to exhibit my work in a way
that suits my style and gives me a lot of creative freedom. I hope that many such places
continue to enrich the Art scene here in HCMC.”
